Get Out on the Water!
The YMCA invites you to become part of our program bringing sailing and boating to middle school students in our surrounding areas – now in our 4th year! Students are part of the Spirit of America Boating Education and Safety Program, and the entire community will be invited to take part in sail, paddle and power recreational boating programs.
Have Fun • Be Smart • Be Safe
Choose a camp experience for kids that give them the gift of independence, adventure, and learning skills they can use for a lifetime!
The Y Boating Program is designed for rising 7th-10th grade students and is offered to both Y members and non-members.
Our week long program focuses on STEM-based (science, technology, engineering, math) practices, education, safe boating environment awareness, leadership development and physical fitness. The non-traditional classroom setting of our beautiful local waters provides both encouragement and inspiration, helping to reverse the decline of outdoor recreation among our youth.
Getting out on the water – which is literally everywhere here in the Lowcountry – offers youth, including those with intellectual or physical differences, the opportunity to foster a lifetime love of the outdoors.
Our Program Goals:
- Teach rising 7th-10th grade students, the skills required to become safe, successful mariners using hands-on method experiences
- Educate functional components of each type of boat in our program
- Impart life skills such as teamwork and good decision-making
- Instill a sense of appreciation and respect for our environment
- Students take and pass the SC DNR Boating License class and exam
This program actively targets youth participants and has set a goal this year of putting at least 50% of our participants through the programs on scholarship. This amounts to thousands worth of programming provided at no or low cost.
- 3- 15’ Hunter sailboats
- 4 – 11’ Zodiacs with outboard engines
- 4 SUPS (stand up paddle boards)
- 12 kayaks
- 4 canoes
The YMCA Boating Program is the only community-based non-profit boating organization in Beaufort County. Our program revenue and your donations make it possible for the Beaufort YMCA to preserve opportunities for the youth of our community to learn safe boating.
