YMCA of Beaufort County: Beaufort YMCA Aquatic Club (BYAC) & Tiger Shark Competitive Swim Team Information.

The BYAC is the first step to becoming a Tiger Shark Swim Team member. The Tiger Shark Swim Team participates in the Carolina YMCA Swim League and has participated in United States Swimming Competitions.

Fall/Winter Season: September 14 - February 21. (21 Weeks. We take the weeks of Nov. 23rd and Dec. 21st off.)

Coach Information: Rick Simonds is the Tiger Shark Head Coach. Rick grew up as a “Y kid” who learned to swim at the Athens YMCA. He has been teaching swim lessons for over 7 years and is a nationally recognized YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor Trainer. This season he was elected as an officer to the Carolina YMCA Swim League.

Tim Wood is the assistant head coach and team secretary. He is an amateur competitive swimmer and springboard diver. He has been active in youth sports for more than 20 years. He and his wife Kristy are both Y-Members and both participate in the Beaufort Masters Swim Team.

BYAC & Tiger Shark Swim Team assistants vary from season to season. A parent advisory board is in place to help guide the activities of the BYAC and Tiger Sharks.

Potential swim team participants must meet with Coach Rick or Coach Tim before sign-up to become oriented with the program. Season costs vary; financial aid and scholarships are available.

For more information about the upcoming season or the program in general, contact Rick Simonds: Head Swim Team Coach, aquaticsymca@hotmail.com.

Lap Swimming.

  • 2 lanes are available at all times for lap swimming. If both lanes have swimmers in them, we will try to make more lanes available. However, sometimes other programs do not make this possible. In these cases, we ask that you swim in a circle in the lanes. Stay to the right side always, just as you would driving a car.
  • During Swim team we will only be able to open one lane for free swim due to the growth of our program. Thank you for understanding!

Aqua Aerobics.

  • Hydrobics (Aqua Power)-A shallow water workout that gives you options for adding power and intensity by varying your working depths and positions. Modifications for all levels are offered.
  • Senior Aqua-A 45 minute senior water aerobic class designed to improve fitness and range of motion. Non swimmers welcome!
  • Deep Water Hydrobics (Aqua Jog)-A water aerobic class in the deep end using buoyancy belts. This is a workout!
